We often experience very extreme temperatures...not usually in a matter of weeks, however. This thermometer on our porch shows the high and low: -50 degrees (blue line), + 50 degrees (green line) and and a nice, balmy -5 degrees currently (red line). We had very cold temperatures for about two weeks and then in a matter of days it warmed up to +50 degrees. A 100 degree swing is quite the experience...
How does one survive such cold temps you ask?
Always keep a sense of humor...like having your Californian in-laws up for a visit is an absolute hoot. (Native Fairbanksians would take this same photo in a string bikini or swim trunks.)
Keep a warm fire going...
